Winston Gordon Team GB Judo and current UK number one middleweight was interviewed in the dojo at Ernest Bevan School in Tooting by ITV news this week about his preparation for London 2012 and how the team at Balance Performance Physiotherapy have not only helped him overcome several potentially career ending injuries but also improve his performance through strength, conditioning and movement drills.

Jason Progl from Balance training Winston and the boys at Ernest Bevan

It was a fantastic afternoon where Winston was filmed putting some of the pupils through their paces in the dojo, they thought that was hard until Jason Progl from Balance took over and tested their ability to really move.

Graham Anderson our Clinical Director has now worked closely with Winston for over ten years as Graham used to be the physio for Team GB Judo. With Graham’s and the team at Balance expertise and Winston’s hard work massive obstacles have been overcome in terms of injury. To be the current UK number 1 and hopefully soon to qualify for the Olympics is a massive achievement for Winston and everyone who has worked with him as Winston says himself

“ Balance is a great asset and an excellent team to work with. I would recommend them to anyone who has sustained a sports injury. I thank them all for all their help and support in enabling me to pursue my Olympic dream“

In an enduring partnership that has lasted longer than most marriages Graham Anderson and Jonathan Lewis are at it again for the eleveth year in a row to ensure the stars of Wimbledon are ready to perform at their best.

The expertise gained through working with elite sportsmen over such a long period of time is invaluable and that knowledge and experience floods into Balance where the whole team benefits. The team approach to working that encapsulates what Balance is about is also evident at Wimbledon where our expert bio-mechanical podiatrist Mick Habgood has been called into service to see one of the players that Graham was treating.

We wish Graham and Jonathan and the players all the best for the final week

The Lissom Technique is the truly innovative creation of two exceptionally gifted specialists in human movment and part of the Balance strength and conditioning team Julien Diaz & Jason Prog.

Lissom is a free flowing movement technique that encompasses a combination of simple but challenging moves and stretches to build core strength, flexibility, balance and endurance. The movmements used in Lissom stem from movments which have been in use for centuries through dance, martial arts and most importantly play. Lissom takes technicaly difficult moves and breaks them down into managable and enjoyable routines.

The Lissom technique has been born out of the need to challenge both the physical and mental elements of our bodies. Our bodies are designed to move in a free flowing and dynamic way, yet in todays society we have become very rigid in our movements as a result of the computer generation.

Using body resisted exercises is both physically and mentally challenging. It is this type of movement which really challenges the body’s stability and coordination and strength. Using precise techniques to achieve good alignment through movement brings fluidity, stability, flexibility and strength. Overall, there is a feeling of body empowerment, liberating your body and mind.

There are two Lissom classes at Balance at 7am and at 7pm every monday, please call to book or for more information.

Jonathan Lewis, Cj Swaby and Ricardo Abreu will be sharing their expert knowledge and experience of how to get the most from this exciting piece of kit.

They will go through basics of press, pull, legs, trunk and combined, compound movements before “pulling the pin” and meeting the challenge of rotational control.

There will be plenty of tuition and group work using the WarMachines so there will be plenty of time to practice and ask questions to learn how strength, endurance, and power are delivered with balance, control and flow.

Cost is £35.

For those that decide they can’t do without CrossCore’s Pulley Suspension System in their lives £35 will be discounted from the cost of your WarMachine.

But we’re not selling time shares! You don’t have to buy one! Just as use of the WarMachine is increasing at Balance Performance gym you will start finding War machines across London and UK so if you want to get the maximum from them this workshop is unmissable.

Call 02076272308 to book a spot or call Jonathan with your questions on 07960 861 267.

Look forward to seeing you there,

Poise, touch, balance, power, strength and grace in movement are very obvious.

Animal Movements:

The original Martial Arts originators observed the animals in nature for inspiration in how they would develop such force and ferocity to defend their habits. Certain animals in particular were revered for their fighting prowess. Out of these studies were develop Animal movements, which recreated the power, grace and agility of the natural kingdom. In this course, full contact champion Steve Cotter shares some of the secrets of Animal Movements to teach you how to use your whole body in a powerful, graceful and integrated manner. Not only are these tremendously challenging, but also unique and a lot of fun.

Kettlebell swing, jerk, snatch and variations:

For those new to kettlebell training, we start from the ground up essentials. For those who have been training for years, you have the benefit of Steve’s experience and the constant improvements and refinements he makes in his own training through his study with the Russian and Ukranian World Champions Lifters. If you think you know how to do these lifts, you will still learn some new tweaks and modification to take your current level to the next level. If this is your first taste of KB training, you will learn the essential movements to get you started on a safe and effective fitness program.
